When I was a child, I watched the cartoon, The Flintstones. There was an episode in which their family dog/dinosaur, Dino, fell in love with an actress. He swooned with desire whenever he saw her. One night, he snuck to the window of her dressing room where he watched her remove her makeup after a performance. She sat at a lighted dressing table, and wiped the paint from her face. As she worked, she transformed from a stunning, sparkling beauty into a plain, almost unattractive dinosaur.

The message of this scene marked itself upon my heart as deeply as any lesson my broken parents made: you are only as worthy as you appear.
